The conditions for organising winter sport events this year were just perfect: lots and lots of snow combined with fair weather. There were absolutely no problems with the 5th International Horn Sleigh Downhill Ride organised on March 4, 2006 in Kowary.
As always, the starting point of the ride was the Okraj Mountain Pass completely covered in snow this year. The starters had to ride along a distance of several kilometres and while on track, they had to take part in additional scored competitions, owing to which the total time of a single ride took almost two hours. This year, the number of teams taking part in the competition was the biggest ever at 21. Beside Polish teams, there were as usual our friends from the Czech Republic as well as German and Dutch teams.
"The Grand Festival of Sleighs" is an event accompanying the downhill rides on horn sleighs and was organised for the second time. This year’s event attracted a huge number of people, numerous families from Kowary came to Podgórze in order to take part in snow games, see the famous horn sleighs and listen to live music from this year’s star of the event, the band GOYA. Since these events are organised yearly, they contribute to the increase of popularity of this over a hundred years old tradition in Karkonosze.
